They have a very carefully controlled. vocabulary and are specifically designed for children who are learning to read and write with Jolly Phonics. \u2022 The text in these Blue Level Books (fourth level) uses only decodable regular words that use the letter-sound knowledge taught so far: the 42 main letter sounds and the main alternative letter-sound spellings (\u2039y\u203a as in happy, the \u2018hop-over \u2039e\u203a\u2019 spellings of the long vowel sounds, \u2039ay\u203a as in. day, \u2039ea\u203a as in seat, \u2039y\u203a and \u2039igh\u203a as in fly and high, \u2039ow\u203a as in low and now, \u2039ew\u203a as in dew, \u2039oy\u203a as in joy, \u2039ir\u203a and \u2039ur\u203a as in bird and turn, and \u2039al\u203a, \u2039au\u203a and \u2039aw\u203a as in talk, pause and saw) and a small number of tricky words (frequently used words that are not fully decodable at this stage). \u2022 All new tricky words and alternative vowel spellings used are shown on the front inside cover. These can be used as a quick practice activity before starting the book. \u2022 Faint type is used for silent letters, like the \u2039b\u203a in lamb. \u2022 Comprehension questions and discussion topics are included at the end of the book.
