At the height of its power in the late nineteenth century, the British Empire ruled one quarter of the world. Today, Britain is a small European country, but its imperial past has left indelible marks on the former colonies and on Britain itself. Empire Tales contains eight stories about the colonial situation by well-known British authors: Kipling, Conrad, Forster, Maugham, Orwell and Jean Rhys. Together they vividly evoke the tension between ruling Europeans and the subject peoples of India, Africa, Asia, and the West Indies during the imperial age.
