Beowulf is one of the greatest surviving examples of Old English Poetry. Set in Scandinavia, the poem tells a story of myth, legend and history. We hear how the great warrior Beowulf comes to the Danish court of King Hrothgar to help free his people from the terrible monster, Grendel, and his evil mother. Next, Beowulf will have to fight a fire-breathing dragon alone. But will his efforts cost him his life this time? In Beowulf the battles with monsters can be seen as conflicts between good and evil. The poem constrasts human society – ordered and based on trust – with the terrors of the unknown world.
