In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley tells the story of a scientist’s attempt to create a new noble species, and experiment which instead produces a monster. It is remarkable that such a young person (Shelley was not yet twenty when she completed the book) should have conceived a work that has aquired myth-like status. Not only can Mary Shelley be considered the creator of a new literary genre, science fiction, but her novel has had an immense influence on many subsequent writers, as well as providing the subject for numerous dramatisations, including film and television adaptations.
