The story of The Good Soldier – a novel notable for its use of an unreliable narrator – is told by a world-weary American millionaire, John Dowell. While on holiday at a fashionable German spa, he and his wife meet the “perfect” English gentleman-soldier Edward Ashburnham and his wife Leonora. All seems calm as their friendship develops; but destructive undercurrents of passion and deception carry the protagonists inexorably forward to a powerful climax, revealing Ford´s intense psychological perception.
