Newcastle, 1802. Lucy is beside her beloved father as he dies. His legacy is held in the mystery of his final words: „The de Northbys owe you”. Lucy learns that Richard de Northby is the wealthy owner of an alum works in Ravenscar. Headstrong, she decides to leave the security of her respectable family and with her sister Alice, stows away on a ship delivering coal to Ravenscar. Once there, the sisters find employment as seaweed gatherers – and Lucy meets handsome army officer Mark Cossart. However, de Northby’s spoilt daughter Zilpha regards him as her personal property.
